Purpose and necessity of gear quenching

First, gear quenching

The gear is quenched and the gear workpiece is cooled to a certain temperature. It can be heated by gas or coal, or it can be heated. At present, the most environmentally popular way is to use high-frequency quenching method, which is easy to operate, safe and environmentally friendly, convenient and fast, and can be automated in batches.

Second, the purpose of gear quenching

The purpose of gear quenching is to transform the supercooled austenite into martensite or bainite to obtain martensite or bainite structure, and then mix with tempering at different temperatures to greatly improve the strength, hardness and resistance of the steel. Grindability, fatigue strength and toughness to meet the different requirements of various mechanical parts and tools.

Gear quenching principle: The workpiece is placed in the inductor (coil). When an alternating current of a certain frequency is applied to the inductor, an alternating magnetic field is generated around the workpiece. The electromagnetic induction of the alternating magnetic field creates a closed induced current in the workpiece - eddy currents. The distribution of the induced current on the cross section of the workpiece is very uneven. The current density of the surface of the workpiece is very high and gradually decreases inward. This phenomenon is called the skin effect. The high-density current of the surface of the workpiece is converted into heat energy, which raises the temperature of the surface layer, that is, achieves surface heating. The higher the current frequency, the greater the difference in current density between the surface layer and the inside of the workpiece, and the thinner the heating layer. Surface quenching can be achieved by rapidly cooling after the temperature of the heating layer exceeds the critical point temperature of the steel.

Third, the necessity of gear quenching

Some parts (including gears) are subjected to higher stress than the core under the action of alternating load and impact load such as torsion and bending. In the case of friction, the surface layer is continuously worn, so that some parts of the surface layer are required to have high strength, high hardness, high wear resistance and high fatigue limit, and only surface strengthening can meet the above requirements. Since surface quenching has the advantages of small deformation and high productivity, it is widely used in production.
